Amelia Spiers is a contemporary abstract artist currently based in Birmingham. The foundation of Amelia’s work is inspired by the shapes and colors found in nature around her. Through manipulating different materials and their reaction to one another, her work begins to tell the story of its creation. Saturated hues and playful gestures guide the composition of each piece, while the contrast and layering of mixed materials bring depth to the canvas or paper. Spiers’ technique is ever-evolving through experimentation with various mediums and shapes found in her sketchbook.

Throughout her childhood and college years, she was artistically influenced by her aunt, Nancy Jones Lowe, both an elementary school art teacher and portrait bird artist. In Amelia’s work, you can see common threads of her interest in nature, whether in the whimsy of a floral or the organic nature of a botanical. All of which speaks to her upbringing on Pawleys Island.

Amelia will soon return to South Carolina with her husband, Will, and their energetic coonhound, Maggie. She hopes that the eye can find pieces in each painting that relate to the receiver while bringing more joy and comfort to the space. Along with her years of self-teaching and learning from Aunt Nancy, Amelia has trained under Laura Deems and Frances Rebula.
